LG Innotek unveil its AI inspection system for raw materials
LG Innotek has unveiled its artificial intelligence (AI)-based inspection system to be used with incoming raw materials. Designed to detect defects in raw materials before they are used, aiding the already established visual inspection technique, the solution aims to boost quality assurance levels and reliability while also minimising costs.
The system works by combining material information and AI image processing technologies to the Radio Frequency System-in-Package (RF-SiP) process. LG Innotek has recently seen the technology introduced for the Flip Chip Ball Grid Array (FC-BGA), providing the company with greater competitiveness and quality, particularly with its semiconductor substrate products.
In semiconductor manufacturing, core raw materials like Prepreg (PPG), Ajinomoto Build-up Film (ABF), and Copper-Clad Laminate (CCL) compromises of glass fibre, inorganic and other compounds. Air voids and foreign particles are often generated during the material mixing process, while they don’t cause significant performance losses, the presence of such defects can cause defects in the increasingly stringent substrate specifications. These types of defects are almost impossible to find using visual inspection alone.
The AI-based Inspection System for Incoming Raw Materials analyses the components and defective areas of semiconductor substrate raw materials within one minute. LG Innotek’s solution boasts an accuracy rate of over 90% as it can visualise quality deviations in each lot of raw materials. The system visualises, quantifies, and standardises material configurations optimised for quality to prevent defective raw materials from entering the production process.
“With the AI-based Inspection System, we will complete LG Innotek's unique AI ecosystem, which delivers exceptional customer value by identifying causes of product defects early in the production process,” said S. David Roh, CTO of LG Innotek. “We will continue innovating in digital production technology to create top-quality products at the lowest cost and in the shortest time.”
Looking to the future, the company hopes to enhance the AI system’s detection capabilities by sharing raw materials-related data with both customers and suppliers. Additionally, LG Innotek is aiming to expand the system’s applications to include optical solutions like camera modules.
