explore3DM website.
explore3DM is an online, problem-solving resource platform that aims to promote 3D measurement and metrology. Currently, the project is self-funded but does boast support from Airbus and the Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Large-Volume metrology at UCL.
As the platform continues to develop, the end goal is to encourage the transfer of knowledge and to make deeper connections between companies, organisations, and groups within the 3D metrology sector. explore3DM is based around a directory of suppliers covering sectors including hardware and software manufacturers, service and training providers, and research and information sources.
“explore3DM will increase the uptake of 3DM amongst potential users through a process of knowledge transfer and access to a wide-ranging directory covering systems manufacturers and resellers, service and training providers, research and information groups,” said Dr Stephen Kyle, Principal Research Fellow in Large-Volume Metrology at University College London. “Expanding the uptake of 3DM will be good for both users and suppliers by expanding business opportunities for both.”
Initially, the website will offer three key features, with plans for expansion further down the line. These three features include:
- Directory - A stand-alone tool that will be expanded in due course to encourage regular visitors.
- Solution Finder – Users will be able to post problems, questions and connection requests to other directory members in the hope of finding a solution.
- Knowledge base – This will be split into two concepts. The first will serve as an introduction to 3D metrology which users can utilise without registration. The second is a library of resources, with illustrative content, that will require registration to access.
Kyle continues, “The suppliers are represented in a directory with over 800 entries, soon to exceed 1000. These are mostly provisional entries which organisations can own themselves, at no cost for basic free membership. In order to get the right short descriptions and directory classifications. The resource is still under development and the library is currently a demonstration area of what we’re planning to add. We’re actively working on funding the next phase of development and users are encouraged to register, again at no cost, to demonstrate their interest in the concept. An active user base will really support the funding request.”
